World Bank Investments Fail to Promote Clean Energy (Update1)
By Jim Efstathiou Jr. |
April 10 (Bloomberg) -- The World Bank's support for projects that reduce carbon-dioxide emissions in developing countries encourages polluting industries and fails to promote renewable energy, the Institute for Policy Studies said.
The manager of $2.1 billion in 10 carbon funds has invested most in ventures that remove climate-warming gases during industrial processes at coal, chemical, iron and steel companies, said Janet Redman, author of today's report. That created an ``incentive'' to maintain the status quo, she said.

WORLD FACING HUGE NEW CHALLENGE ON FOOD FRONT
Lester R. Brown |
A fast-unfolding food shortage is engulfing the entire world, driving food prices to record highs. Over the past half-century grain prices have spiked from time to time because of weather-related events, such as the 1972 Soviet crop failure that led to a doubling of world wheat, rice, and corn prices. The situation today is entirely different, however. The current doubling of grain prices is trend-driven, the cumulative effect of some trends that are accelerating growth in demand and other trends that are slowing the growth in supply.

Fuel Choices, Food Crises and Finger-Pointing
By ANDREW MARTIN
Published: April 15, 2008
NY Times

The idea of turning farms into fuel plants seemed, for a time, like one of the answers to high global oil prices and supply worries. That strategy seemed to reach a high point last year when Congress mandated a fivefold increase in the use of biofuels.

REVISITING THE GLOBAL WARMING-HURRICANE LINK
By Peter N. Spotts | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
from the April 14, 2008 edition
|
A new study underscores the difficulty of estimating global warming's effect on weather.
Since the devastating 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, scientists have been briskly testing the notion that global warming's fingerprints have already appeared on tropical-cyclone activity worldwide.
Now, a new analysis from the scientist who helped trigger that flurry of studies suggests that the answer to questions about global warming's impact on current tropical cyclone trends may instead be: No, not yet.

Bush vision on climate change under fire at Paris meeting
|
PARIS (AFP) — US President George W. Bush's new blueprint for tackling global warming came under attack on Thursday from other carbon emitters, with some branding his scheme a step backwards in the battle against climate change.
Leading the charge at a meeting in Paris was South Africa, which lashed the proposals Bush outlined on Wednesday as a retreat by the planet's No. 1 polluter and a slap to poor countries least to blame for today's warming crisis.

Sticker Shock in the Organic Aisles
By ANDREW MARTIN and KIM SEVERSON
Published: April 18, 2008
NY Times
|
Shoppers have long been willing to pay a premium for organic food. But how much is too much?
Rising prices for organic groceries are prompting some consumers to question their devotion to food produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers or antibiotics. In some parts of the country, a loaf of organic bread can cost $4.50, a pound of pasta has hit $3, and organic milk is closing in on $7 a gallon.
