Billings, Mont. (AP) -- The federal government is suspending a major loan program for coal-fired power plants in rural communities, saying the uncertainties of climate change and rising construction costs make the loans too risky.

Wind turbines propel Logan's energy efforts
By Peter J. Howe Globe Staff / March 5, 2008
Boston Globe
|
No, those were not propeller planes that mistakenly landed on Logan International Airport's headquarters yesterday.
They are miniature wind turbines, the first five in a fleet of 20 that are making Logan the latest of several organizations on Greater Boston's waterfront to tap the steady power of ocean breezes to cut their electric bills.

My Forbidden Fruits (and Vegetables)
By JACK HEDIN
March 1, 2008
Rushford, Minn.

IF you’ve stood in line at a farmers’ market recently, you know that the local food movement is thriving, to the point that small farmers are having a tough time keeping up with the demand.
But consumers who would like to be able to buy local fruits and vegetables not just at farmers’ markets, but also in the produce aisle of their supermarket, will be dismayed to learn that the federal government works deliberately and forcefully to prevent the local food movement from expanding.

Hogs help battle beetle in apple orchard

CLAYTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Jim Koan has gone hog-wild in his battle against a beetle that threatens his 120-acre organic apple orchard.
As part of a research experiment believed to be among the first of its kind, Koan is using pigs to help protect his fruit from the plum curculio, a tiny insect that is among the most destructive apple pests.

Turning Glare Into Watts
By MATTHEW L. WALD
Published: March 6, 2008
NY Times

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — At first, as he adjusted pumps and checked temperatures, Aaron Boucher looked like any technician in the control room of an electrical plant. Then he rushed to the window and scanned the sky, to check his fuel supply.
Mr. Boucher was battling clouds, timing the operations of his power plant to get the most out of patchy sunshine. It is a skill that may soon be in greater demand, for the world appears to be on the verge of a boom in a little-known but promising type of solar power.
