"Consultants' report promotes consolidation of waste management efforts" |
A report by an independent consultant has come out with strong recommendations that the waste management functions on Martha's Vineyard should not only be consolidated under one central authority but infrastructure changes could force improvements in the ways that our wastes and recyclables are handled.

Huge study gives wake-up call on state of world's oceans
February 15 2008 |
- Human activity damages more than 40% of seas
- First 'big picture' map worse than expected

A global map of the overall impact that 17 different human activities are having on marine ecosystems. Insets show three of the most heavily impacted areas in the world, and one of the least impacted areas.
Fishing, climate change and pollution have left an indelible mark on virtually all of the world's oceans, according to a huge study that has mapped the total human impact on the seas for the first time.

Energy Tip
Take a Bite Out of Chemicals
One way to offset some of the high cost of organics is to limit our spending to the produce most likely to be saturated in pesticides. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s website (www.foodnews.org) to view a handy list ranking nonorganic produce by pesticide load. Here are the top ten most pesticide-laden fruits and veggies (from worst to ..somewhat less worst, but still alarming): 1.Peaches, 2.Apples, 3.Sweet bell peppers, 4.Celery, 5.Nectarines, 6.Strawberries, 7.Cherries, 8.Pears, 9.Grapes (imported) 10. Spinach

MV Times Article on Energy Saving Tips
|
The Martha's Vineyard Times will celebrate Earth Day with an article on no-nonsense, everyday things we do to save the planet. Tell us what you do. For example Anna Marie D'Addarie, Calendar Editor, says, "I take 5 minute showers and put my watering can into the shower to capture the water as it heats up before I get in. Also, I do not buy or drink bottle water and I always use a refillable mug for my morning coffee. I changed my habits after taking the Low Carbon Diet Workshop at the Vineyard Haven Library in November." Tell us how you make a difference. Email Anna Marie at: calendar@mvtimes.com. |

Mobilizing to Save Civilization

Need data? Sometimes numbers can tell a story. Here are some of the figures from the behind-the-scenes research for the latest book from Earth Policy Institute, Plan B 3.0.
Did you know? The eight warmest years on record have all occurred in the last decade. For seven of the last eight years, the world has consumed more grain than it produced; grain stocks are now at a historic low. One fifth of the U.S. grain harvest is now being turned into fuel ethanol. One third of reptile, amphibian, and fish species examined by the World Conservation Union are considered to be threatened with extinction. And much more.. Complete data sets and charts are now available on-line at www.earthpolicy.org/Books/PB3/data.htm |

Welcome to our Summer 2008 Programs page! The Farm Institute
|
Need some information on our summer programs? Well look no further. Our programs are designed to connect children to the culture of agriculture through fun, exciting, and informative farm experiences. Our belief is that just about everything a child learns—values, work ethic, teamwork, commitment to community, caring for the land, even the "3-Rs"—are experienced on the FARM. It is our joy to work with our young students and help them grow alongside our plants and animals.

| “Development Permitting Processes on Martha's Vineyard” |
The Martha's Vineyard Commission has released “Development Permitting Processes on Martha's Vineyard”, a study that addresses how the permitting processes at the town and Commission level can be made more transparent and efficient, without compromising the standards that boards and commissions are mandated to uphold.
The study is the result of a comprehensive review of Island land use permitting practices and procedures, carried out over the past few months, with funding from the Commonwealth’s Expedited Permitting Law. This is a companion document to a statewide review of local permitting processes and compilation of 26 Best Practices, undertaken by the Massachusetts Association of Regional Planning Agencies (MARPA).

How Can We Ensure Clean Water in our Taps and Ponds?
Everyone needs clean drinking water and protection from wastewater’s health hazards. The Vineyard faces the added challenge of protecting our fragile coastal ponds and other surface waters, key to our economy and quality of life.

As Nuclear Waste Languishes, Expense to U.S. Rises

WASHINGTON — Forgotten but not gone, the waste from more than 100 nuclear reactors that the federal government was supposed to start accepting for burial 10 years ago is still at the reactor sites, at least 20 years behind schedule. But it is making itself felt in the federal budget.

How to Handle an Invasive Species? Eat it

LATE last year, a flotilla of fluorescent jellyfish covering 10 square miles of ocean was borne by the tide into a small bay on the Irish Sea. These mauve stingers, venomous glow-in-the-dark plankton native to the Mediterranean, slipped through the mesh of aquaculture nets, stinging the 120,000 fish in Northern Ireland’s only salmon farm to death.
