Water Quality Management Plan’ brochure now available for distribution
By Marnie Stanton, Vineyard Conservation Almanac |
The Martha’s Vineyard Water Alliance has produced a brochure entitled “Water Quality Management Plan, One Island-Shared Watersheds”. Its purpose is to provide information about how groundwater works, what is causing water quality problems in our ponds, and how the Island can do something about it with comprehensive watershed management planning.
Go to the Water section for the rest of the announcement and the brochure. |

Sustainable Island |
Four years ago the Vineyard Energy Project wrote a ten-year action plan outlining a series of strategies for the Island — which imports virtually all of its energy — to achieve greater independence.
Today some progress has been made. At this writing there are one hundred and fifty three documented solar systems on the Vineyard, including fourteen solar demonstration sites. Wind is the new darling of the renewable energy world, and a small but steady stream of Vineyard homeowners have begun to apply for wind turbines. The Vineyard has been called the Saudia Arabia of wind so many times that the phrase is at risk for becoming a cliche.

Wall Street Shows Skepticism Over Coal
By JEFFREY BALL
February 4, 2008; Page A6
Wall Street Journal |
Three of Wall Street's biggest investment banks are set to announce today that they are imposing new environmental standards that will make it harder for companies to get financing to build coal-fired power plants in the U.S.
Citigroup Inc., J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Morgan Stanley say they have concluded that the U.S. government will cap greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants sometime in the next few years. The banks will require utilities seeking financing for plants before then to prove the plants will be economically viable even under potentially stringent federal caps on carbon dioxide, the main man-made greenhouse gas.

Ice Melt Accelerates Around the World
February 4, 2008
Frances C. Moore |
With atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations at new record highs and global average temperature now some 0.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the frozen regions of the earth are showing us just how rapidly climate change can take effect. Recent years have seen ice melt accelerate and spread to new, previously unaffected regions. In many areas, the pace of melting has surprised even the scientists studying it most closely, providing a strong early indication that the consequences of climate change could come faster and be more severe than previously believed.

Navy Must Comply With No-Sonar Rule
By ANDREW DALTON, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, February 5, 2008
Los Angeles (AP) |
Environmental groups seeking to protect whales from the potentially harmful effects of sonar cheered a legal victory against the Navy and the Bush administration.
U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper ruled Monday that the Navy is not exempt from complying with both the National Environmental Policy Act and a court injunction that created a 12 nautical-mile no-sonar zone off Southern California.

Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR)
Vol. 85, No. 1, February / March |
Commissioner's Column
This February-March issue anticipates the end of winter and the beginning of preparations for the spring and summer growing season. We at the Department of Agricultural Resources hope we have done all that’s possible to assist our agricultural community in realizing a banner year in sales and profitability.
My first two months as your new Agricultural Commissioner have been very rewarding and enlightening. I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting with farmers all over the Commonwealth, showing me their operations and sharing with me their dreams and concerns.
