Pondfront Owners Shocked at Tax Bills
By JACK SHEA
Vineyard Gazette

A dozen stunned West Tisbury property owners crowded the normally quiet town assessors meeting this week to question their assessments and tax bills, which have more than doubled this year.

The residents were looking for both tax relief and an explanation of a property valuation system they said they neither understand nor trust.

Controversial offshore wind farm clears hurdle

Federal agency to hear comments, then make final decision on Cape Wind

Mon., Jan. 14, 2008
WASHINGTON - A key federal agency gave preliminary environmental approval to a proposed wind farm off Cape Cod on Monday, giving a boost to a project that has sparked a long and bitter public fight in the region.

A report by the Minerals Management Service said plans by developer Cape Wind Associates to build 130 windmills across 25 miles of federal waters in Nantucket Sound would pose no major environmental problems. The agency looked at the project's effect in areas including water quality, wildlife, air traffic, the fishing industry, recreation and tourism. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22651579/

How fine's your kettle of fish?
Only as fine as it is sustainable. When shopping for seafood, take along an easy-to-use pocket guide or tap into a phone-text service that'll help you determine whether that Chilean sea bass is eco-friendly-fine enough for your kettle.

Blue Ocean Institute FishPhone - send a text to 30644 with the message FISH in all caps, followed by the name of the fish you want to know about, and it'll fire back sustainability info on that species. Oceans Alive - download a pocket seafood selector and check its up-to-date list for the skinny on the most and least sustainable fish. NRDC - mercury info and another pocket-sized seafood selector that focuses on mercury levels.

WEST BARNSTABLE — Wave energy converters may have a low profile, but the technology made a splash at Cape Cod Community College last night. During a forum sponsored by the Cape and Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative, a diverse audience that included students, selectmen and engineers was introduced to the devices that could one day provide about 7 percent of the country's energy needs.

Biofuel Update
Europe May Ban Imports of Some Biofuel Crops
By JAMES KANTER
January 15, 2008
NY Times

PARIS — In a sign of growing concern about the impact of supposedly “green” policies, European Union officials will propose a ban on imports of certain biofuels, according to a draft law to be unveiled next week. If approved by European governments, the law would prohibit the importation of fuels derived from crops grown on certain kinds of land — including forests, wetlands or grasslands — into the 27-nation bloc.

Shrinking continent is losing ice faster today than a decade ago.

Antarctica: gaining weight in the middle, but losing more at the edges.Nature Geosciences

A comprehensive study of Antarctica’s ice confirms that the polar cap is shrinking. In 2006 alone, Antarctica lost nearly 200 billion tonnes of ice, researchers say — the equivalent of a global sea level rise of more than half a millimetre. That’s 75% more than losses in 1996, they add.

Proposed wind farm draws few foes in Hull
By Peter J. Howe
Globe Staff / January 17, 2008
Boston Globe

Sometime next year, Hull could become the first community in Massachusetts to get all its electricity from wind power.

After years of study, Hull officials are now seeking approval of state environmental regulators to install four wind turbines, each about 430 feet high, in ocean waters about a mile and a half east of Nantasket Beach.

Bird News
By ROBERT A. CULBERT
Vineyard Gazette
Now that the annual Christmas Bird Count is fading into pleasant memories and a lot of fascinating data, we might be lulled into thinking that we can put citizen science aside until next winter. Nope! Such is not the case, as we have a request for help with a winter waterfowl survey of sites where people feed wild ducks and geese.

Bush OKs sonar use despite court rule
By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post / January 17, 2008

Security trumps threat to whales

WASHINGTON - The White House has exempted the Navy from complying with two major environmental laws in an effort to free the service from a federal court's decision limiting the Navy's use of sonar in training exercises.

Environmentalists who had sued successfully to limit the use of loud, mid-frequency sonar - which can be harmful to whales and other marine mammals - said the exemptions were unprecedented and could lead to a larger legal battle over the extent to which the military has to follow environmental laws.
