| Thimble Farm Purchase Closes |
|
On December 18, Eric Grubman officially acquired Benson's Thimble Farm from Lawrence Benson. The new owner, working closely with Andrew Woodruff and the Whippoorwill Farm CSA Advisory Group, will immediately begin to develop a master plan for the property that will explore the best options for the acreage and infrastructure that now exists or could exist on the property.
"This is a very exciting and challenging time for the CSA because it now has the prospect of working with a knowledgeable and committed owner who wishes that the land remain in food production, that the CSA be a strong and viable organization and that the farm realize it's potential to be a model for sustainable agriculture." said Alice Early, a member of the CSA Advisory Group. |

Pelosi leads the House to go organic in its cafeterias
Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Monday, December 17, 2007
San Francisco Chronicle |
(12-17) 04:00 PST Washington -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may have left her progressive instincts at the barn door when she drove a starch-, sugar- and fat-bloated bill that all but left out organic farmers through the House last summer, but when it comes to food for Congress, it's out with high-fructose corn syrup and in with uncaged hens and hormone-free milk.

Edgartown, Oak Bluffs join in Sengekontacket Pond effort
By Steve Myrick - December 20, 2007
MV Times |
Edgartown and Oak Bluffs selectmen met together Monday to address the growing problem of bacterial pollution in Sengekontacket Pond. The boards agreed to work jointly to improve water quality.
In July, Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries biologists told Edgartown and Oak Bluffs shellfish constables that Sengekontacket Pond would need to be closed to shellfishing as a result of sustained high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. The state has reclassified the saltwater pond that is connected to Nantucket Sound by two channels spanned by bridges as a "conditionally approved area." Under that classification, which does not affect swimming or boating, shellfishing is only allowed from October 1 to May 31 until further notice.

What Was That All About?
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

As readers of this column know, I have a rule that there is a simple way to test whether any Arab-Israeli peace deal is real or not: If you need a Middle East expert to explain it to you, it’s not real. I now have the same rule about global climate agreements: If you need an environmental expert to explain it to you, it’s not real.

100% Corn-based products will soon be saturating the Island!
Marnie Stanton, Vineyard Conservation Almanac |
Just eight months ago Mark Martin hadn’t given recycling a thought, now that is just about all he thinks about. His consciousness was raised by the wave of recent stories about tainted pet foods, poisoned products and dangerous toys. The power of the purse over company policy suddenly became very apparent to him.
