By MARK ALAN LOVEWELL
Vineyard Gazette

If the bay scallop fishery can be restored to places like Cape Cod and Long Island, the Vineyard may be able to take credit for it.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) is in the midst of a multi-year scientific experiment in Menemsha Pond that could have a wide-ranging impact on the future of bay scallops in the region.

By JIM HICKEY
Vineyard Gazette
That’s the translation of a technical study released this week by a leading marine biologist which concludes that a flock of invasive cormorants and — to a lesser extent — a group of domesticated dogs are responsible for the high levels of fecal contamination in Sengekontacket Pond.

Wind Update
Michael Marcus thinks he has fix for an issue hobbling wind energy
MV Times

Look past the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School next time you drive by, and you can't miss the tower of the wind turbine behind the building. Check the tower on several outings, and you'll notice that on some days the blades are spinning hard, on other days slowly, and on others not at all.

Cape commission takes stand after clashing with state
By Patrick Cassidy

November 29, 2007
Cape Cod Times
Twice in the past two years the Cape Cod Commission has faced attempts to subvert its decisions on major utility projects.

In the first case, Barnstable County's land use agency stood by while the state's Energy Facilities Siting Board overturned its denial of a KeySpan gas pipeline on the Mid-Cape.

Transportation Update
America crazy about breadbox on wheels called Smart car
By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Linda Moudakas drives a Mercedes-Benz sedan with 140,000 miles on the odometer. For her next car, she's thinking of downsizing. Really downsizing.

She's in line to buy something that looks like a glorified golf cart, a car so short it can theoretically be legally parked head first along a curb. No hood. No trunk.

Nature Update
Snowy owls are a must see
By E. VERNON LAUX
November 25, 2007
Cape Cod Times

There are places on the Cape and Islands still so wild and undisturbed that one feels interconnected with the natural world.

The winter beach, the interface of ocean and land, is a wild and untamable place, at times serene, at others a swirling maelstrom; the forces of wind, water, waves and raging currents interact in furious glory.

The region offers several winter beach wonders, including the Province Lands, South Beach and Monomoy, Sandy Neck, Great Point on Nantucket, East Beach on the Vineyard and Cape Pogue on Chappaquiddick. They are magnificent, beautiful, unspoiled places to see aspects of nature that can only happen there.
