Drought-Stricken South Facing Tough Choices
By BRENDA GOODMAN
October 16, 2007
NY Times

ATLANTA, Oct. 15 — For the first time in more than 100 years, much of the Southeast has reached the most severe category of drought, climatologists said Monday, creating an emergency so serious that some cities are just months away from running out of water.

In North Carolina, Gov. Michael F. Easley asked residents Monday to stop using water for any purpose “not essential to public health and safety.” He warned that he would soon have to declare a state of emergency if voluntary efforts fell short.

Apple in Legal Hot Water Over IPhone Chemicals
By Bryan Gardiner, October 15, 2007

Man, Apple just can't catch a break, environmentally speaking. In addition to receiving thorough tongue lashing from Greenpeace about potentially hazardous chemicals in the iPhone, the Center for Environmental Health upped the stakes on Monday and said it will actually be initiating legal action against the Cupertino company.

Weatherizing Pays Dividends All Year
Since even small cracks and openings in walls can have the same effect on your home's energy efficiency as leaving a window open, sealing every opening is critical. It's also easy and inexpensive. Weather-strip or caulk drafty window and doorframes. Don't forget those in the basement or attic.

Troubled Waters: An analysis of 2005 Clean Water Act compliance

October 2007
U.S. PIRG Education Fund

Executive Summary
October 18, 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, a landmark law intended to restore and maintain the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the nation’s waters. In passing the Clean Water Act, Congress set the goals of eliminating the discharge of pollutants into the nation’s waterways by 1985 and making all U.S. waterways fishable and swimmable by 1983. Although we have made significant progress in improving water quality since the passage of the Clean Water Act, we are far from realizing the Act’s original vision.

Cape agency rejects plans for offshore wind farm
By Patrick Cassidy
STAFF WRITER
October 19, 2007

BARNSTABLE — There was no surprise in a unanimous decision by the Cape Cod Commission yesterday to deny a wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound.

The vote, 12-0, came after about an hour of sometimes contentious debate. It tops six months of back-and-forth between the commission, Cape Wind's developer and advocates for and against the proposal.

Mysterious seal deaths linked to food chain contaminants

October 15, 2007

It's a great irony of the modern world that attempts to make us safer sometimes make us less so. Fire causes billions of dollars in damage every year and kills thousands. Plastic items like small electronic gear and building materials are petroleum-based and would be very flammable if not for chemicals added during the manufacturing process known as brominated flame retardants, or BFRs.

NStar to sell green power
By Patrick Cassidy
STAFF WRITER
October 17, 2007

Earlier this year, the Cape Light Compact decided it could not stand by and watch NStar go green without asking some questions.

This week, the Compact — which represents the purchasing power of 170,000 electricity customers on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard — reached an agreement with NStar on the company's plan to start a green energy program.
