Scott Lively Is Most Unlikely Farmer Green
By SAM BUNGEY
Vineyard Gazette |
He runs Dakota Beef from home in Edgartown.
Prepare yourself before meeting organic beef farmer Scott Lively. You may never want to eat fast food again.
“So you put the trim into a tray, dump the tray into a bucket, and every few hours that bucket gets turned into a bag of meat,” explains Mr. Lively, describing the journey of a hamburger from barn to bun.

| What’s putting some aquaculturists in a “foul “mood? |
Fouling organisms are taking their toll on marine aquaculture
Worldwide, fouling organisms such as mussels, barnacles, seaweeds and sponges, among others, have wreaked havoc on commercial and recreational marine operations, colonizing docks and pilings and the hulls of boats. Biofoulers weigh down floating docks, and can cause drag and reduce fuel efficiency in vessels. Even with the development of “state of the art” antifouling materials, most docks and boats still need to be cleaned and treated on a yearly basis.

Gas Emissions Rarely Figure in Investor Decisions
By CLAUDIA H. DEUTSCH
Published: September 25, 2007
NY Times |
Corporations have become better about disclosing their greenhouse gas emissions and somewhat better about curbing them. But few investors are using that information to decide where to put their money.
That was the gist of the fifth annual report of the Carbon Disclosure Project, a nonprofit group that monitors corporate disclosure related to climate change. The group, which gathers its data through surveys, represents 315 institutional investors that manage a total of $41 trillion in assets.

Energy Tip
Ink cartridges take eons to decompose. Recycle your old ones, and next time you buy, go with refilled cartridges, which work just like conventional ones and cost less. Saving money. Recycled cartridges cost up to 75% less than new ones. Smaller landfills. An average ink cartridge takes about 450 years to decompose. Conserving oil. Recycling an ink cartridge can save 3 qt of oil.

Eider duck deaths puzzle researchers
By Doug Fraser
STAFF WRITER

Cape Cod Times |
WELLFLEET — The white sandy shore of Duck Harbor is great for beachcombing. Lobster buoys, rope, driftwood, even a sailboat wash ashore here. But among the piles of twisted eelgrass, smooth stones and jingle shells at the wrack line are scores of common eiders. Beaks open, necks in a still-sinuous curve, the wings sodden. Dead.

Report Mixed On Cape Wind
By JULIA WELLS
Vineyard Gazette |
A staff report released by the Cape Cod Commission this week gives a decidedly mixed review to the controversial plan by Cape Wind Associates to build 130 wind turbines on Horseshoe Shoal. The report finds that Cape Wind’s plan to connect the turbines to land in West Yarmouth through underwater electricity transmission lines meets only eight of 32 performance standards set by the commission.

WEST TISBURY, MA– American cod, once common in Martha’s Vineyard waters, hasn’t been fished here for years. But a group made up of Vineyard fishermen and others want to do something about that: They are talking about creating a nursery operation to raise cod for release to replenish the local population.
