ANNUAL DAVID H. SMITH MEMORIAL LECTURE
Wed, Aug. 1, 2007
Global Warming in our own Backyards, Polly Hill Arboretum, 7:30pm at the Far Barn
While New England weather remains famously unpredictable, global warming is already impacting nature in our own backyards. How do we know? Evidence from conservation biologist Dr. Richard Primack, an expert on the global loss of biological diversity, reveals the effect of climate change in Massachusetts. His fieldwork, based partly in Concord because of the documented observations of Henry David Thoreau, shows how warmer temperatures have influenced the spring arrival times of birds, the flowering of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees, as well as other natural phenomena. Please make plans to join us for this special lecture where Primack, professor at Boston University and visiting researcher at Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum, will explore the local influence of global warming along with conservation measures to protect plant and animal populations already under pressure due to pollution and development. $8/$5 for PHA members
