Recycling Update
GREEN CONSUMER ALERT
Did you know that compact fluorescent light bulbs must be recycled?

CF bulbs are being widely adopted because they have a longer rated life and use less energy. Though the initial cost is higher than an incandescent lamp, a CF bulb typically saves more than $30 in electricity costs over the lamp’s lifetime. But like all fluorescent lamps, CF bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, a toxic substance which contributes to air and water pollution. The mercury is not released unless the bulb is broken. So, when CF bulbs burn out, do not place them in the trash. Safe disposal requires storing the bulbs unbroken until they can be processed. Bring them to the weigh-in station at the waste transfer facility located in Edgartown near the airport. They have a dedicated shed equipped to handle and store the bulbs safely.

If a CFL breaks in your home, open nearby windows to ventilate, sweep up fragments and wipe area with a damp paper towel. Do NOT use a vacuum or your bare hands. Place all fragments and used paper towels in a sealed plastic bag and take to the waste transfer facility in Edgartown.

Recycling rates mixed on Cape and Islands
By Mary Ann Bragg, STAFF WRITER

Cape Cod Times
A pesky state statistic showing how well towns in Massachusetts are recycling household trash has put some local officials on the defensive.

Each year, towns are asked to submit data to the state that provides solid waste, recycling, composting and hazardous waste collection statistics. Using that data, the state calculates each town's recycling rate.

Climate Change Update
Study Sees Climate Change Impact on Alaska
By WILLIAM YARDLEY
Published: June 28, 2007
NY Times

Many of Alaska’s roads, runways, railroads and water and sewer systems will wear out more quickly and cost more to repair or replace because of climate change, according to a study released yesterday.

Higher temperatures, melting permafrost, a reduction in polar ice and increased flooding are expected to raise the repair and replacement cost of thousands of infrastructure projects as much as $6.1 billion for a total of nearly $40 billion — about a 20 percent increase — from now to 2030, according to the study, by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Alaska Anchorage.
