Living Local - a day for possibilities
May 3, 2007
By Pat Waring
MV Times
|
For anyone who is dismayed about global warming, discouraged about the options for fixing the problem, and disheartened that it often seems the Vineyard has lost its rural essence, Saturday's Living Local event at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury was brightly reassuring. It was a day of hope, of ideals, of education, and enjoyment too.

| New Fund to Support Menemsha Fisheries |
The Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund is a new corporation and source of incentives for developing sustainable commercial fishing in Menemsha. The fund is established with private donations to act as a change agent, to provide vision, logistical and financial support for new initiatives and new directions for commercial fishing in the Town of Chilmark. Grants will be given to upgrade equipment, to try new sustainable aquaculture and fishing techniques, and to diversify operations. The goal is to return Menemsha to a viable and economically sound fishing village.

| Ocean's "Twilight Zone" May Be a Key to Understanding Climate Change |
Carbon dioxide consumed before it sinks in deep ocean may re-enter atmosphere as greenhouse gas
A major study sheds new light on the role of carbon dioxide once it's transported to the oceans' depths. The research indicates that instead of sinking, carbon dioxide is often consumed by animals and bacteria and recycled in the "twilight zone," a dimly lit area 100 to 1,000 meters below the surface. Because a fraction of the carbon never reaches the deep ocean, where it can be stored and prevented from re-entering the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas, knowing how much and what controls the flux of sinking carbon through the twilight zone is key to understanding the oceans' role in controlling atmospheric carbon dioxide and hence climate.

The Aussie ‘Big Dry’
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: May 4, 2007
SYDNEY, Australia |
Almost everywhere you travel these days, people are talking about their weather — and how it has changed. Nowhere have I found this more true, though, than in Australia, where “the big dry,” a six-year record drought, has parched the Aussie breadbasket so severely that on April 19, Prime Minister John Howard actually asked the whole country to pray for rain.

Energy Tip
The MVRRD transfer station out near the airport now has a new “Universal wastes,” storage shed on the property. They are now able to recycle products containing mercury. Please bring your used compact florescent bulbs, florescent lamps, thermostats, and thermometers to the Scale House and they will direct you further. See Recycle section for the article on this Shed.

| Tick Removal News |
| A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it and it's much less traumatic for the patient. |

Cape faces tough fight for wastewater funds
April 28, 2007 6:00 AM
By DOUG FRASER, STAFF WRITER

HYANNIS — Here's the lesson town officials took away from yesterday's conference on wastewater funding: Think locally because the federal government is not going to help with money.
"Nobody is going to write a big check for wastewater on Cape Cod," said Barnstable Assistant Town Manager Paul Niedzwiecki, chairman of the Barnstable County Wastewater Collaborative.

Gardeners Turn To Organic Products For Healthy Lawns
UPDATED: April 27, 2007 |
Experts: Organic Lawns More Resistant To Heat, Moisture
WASHINGTON -- Many gardeners are Going Green and using organic alternatives to weed killers, pesticides and lawn enhancers. Instead of killing all that's bad in the garden, organics enhance all that's good. They leave people with a beautiful landscape that doesn't pollute. Mitch Baker's Chevy Chase garden is an organic Eden -- healthy and vibrant. It hasn't tasted a chemical in years. "I don't have the insect and disease problems I used to have," Baker said.

Pondering Our Legacy...
TUESDAY, 01 MAY 2007 |
Our days are full of light and sun. Darkness has left this corner of the Arctic and left us with a lovely lingering dusk through our sleeping hours. We rise at 5:30 am with sun-filled tents and light our stoves with relative ease. We break a light sweat packing our sleds and harnessing dogs. By noon the sun is as high as it will be in it's low arc across the sky, and we are down to one long underwear layer on top. We have swapped our winter hats for ball caps and visors, and reapply sunscreen again and again to our sunburned faces.
