Consumer Labeling Initiative
By Joanie Ames, VCS Board Member
|
The Vineyard Conservation Society (VCS) has recently launched a new campaign to educate the public about using “eco-friendly” consumer products at Cronig’s markets. This initiative is both educational and public-relations oriented.
The goals are to clearly mark items that are non-toxic, exclude phosphates and Clorox and antibiotics, the latter two being bad for septic systems. Then shortly branch out to hardware stores and nurseries to guide customers to non-toxic landscaping products.
Please go to the Toxins and Pesticides section under the Environmental Education section. Also see the listings of suggested products for home use.

| Island Plan Update |
Each of the first five work groups of the Island plan have established two preliminary sets of goals. The first are short term actions that are ready to implement during the next few years and the second are long term initiatives. One example of a long term initiative being promoted by the Livelihood and Commerce work group is the establishment of a community-owned electric utility. Here is a brief description:
COMMUNITY–OWNED LOCAL ELECTRIC UTILITY
As an island, we could improve things in many ways if we had a community-owned electric utility.
Go to Island Plan for the rest of the description, as well as the Energy and Solid Waste work group update. |

Ideas on Community Supported Energy
By Peter Cabana, Cape Light Compact Representative |
An island wide community owned public electrical utility is an option the island of Martha’s Vineyard must investigate if Martha’s Vineyard really wants to become a “renewable energy island”. We need to make the energy we use and not have to depend on the mainland for virtually all our energy needs.

Global warming knocking at your door
March 20, 2007
By Bill McKibben
Boston Globe |
THE MOMENTUM in the economy has begun a small, still barely discernible shift toward the local and away from the global. You can see it in ways large and small: President Bush, touring Latin America, talks less about new free trade agreements, suddenly not as popular either with our neighbors or with the new Democratic Congress. Meanwhile, local food is on the cover of Time magazine -- and on the menu, with italicized encomiums, on every high-end menu.

Edgartown sets new health rules for Ocean Heights, Arbutus Park
March 22, 2007
By Susan Vaughn
MV Times |
New wastewater disposal regulations for the Ocean Heights and Arbutus Park subdivisions approved by the Edgartown board of health last week are intended to create safer drinking water and a healthier Sengekontacket Pond. Homeowners in those neighborhoods, however, are not convinced the regulations will do either.

On glare ice--no snow for travel
TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2007
|
Part of an email sent by Abby's mother Sandy Fenton:
The team on Baffin Island are pinned down by incredible winds up to seventy miles an hour with blowing sand. They had a very difficult day on Sunday haling their 1000+ lb sleds up a waterfall and over boulders but lived to tell about it! Sunday night they evidently had a hard time holding on to their tents. Let's hope last night was better.
Yesterday there was no hope of sending out a text and photo dispatch. Winds were gusting up to 70 miles per hour. It was impossible to walk outside without being blown down the glare ice of the river. Our tents were shredding, cords breaking, tent poles snapping, and blowing sand and snow was finding its way into every nook and cranny. On my watch, the graph of the barometric pressure plummeted for twenty-seven straight hours, indicating a storm of great intensity.
