March 12, 2007
by Greg Pahl, Vermont Biofuels Association, Co-Founder

Although we have the necessary resources and technology to meet most of our energy needs in the future with renewable energy, until fairly recently one key strategy has, for the most part, been overlooked in North America. This strategy involves the cooperative or collaborative installation and ownership of renewable energy projects at the local, community level.

Ideal Bite
Energy Tip
Get your whites brighter without the health risks of chlorine. Just try an oxygen-based formula.
Easier on clothes. Alternative bleaches aren't as harsh as chlorine and you can use 'em on colors. Safer for your fam. In the US, 25,000+ kids "are exposed to" (EPA code for "have accidents involving") chlorine bleach each year. Safer for the earth. Chlorine from bleach can produce carcinogenic compounds if it gets past water treatment. Ecover Non-Chlorine Bleach - also available as a liquid. Available here. 20 Mule Team Borax - ½-cup releases major hydrogen peroxide bleaching power. OxiClean Free - OxiClean's dye- and fragrance-free version.

Expedition Update
A visit with Jessieloosie

Jessieloosie Eeshuglutak, an Inuit elder with a warm smile and sparkling eyes, invited me and Abby into a sod house by the ice-covered Pangnirtung shore. Lasaloosie built the sod house with the cooperation of the hamlet and manages it as a traditional skills school and educational center. From the outside the low house with a rounded roof is almost completely covered in snow. The only clue to the warmth inside is the condensation from the warm air escaping from the roof vent.
