Ryan Malonson, Chief of the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah, Speaks of Tribal Ways
By Marnie Stanton, Vineyard Conservation Almanac

“We use to be counted as ‘souls’ on the census until 1870”, Chief Ryan Malonson mused, as he described the Wampanoag tribe’s freedom before Gay Head (Aquinnah) was established as a “District” – effectively ending local autonomy and the native communal system of land tenure.

A Cool $25 Million for a Climate Backup Plan
By JOHN TIERNEY
Published: February 13, 2007

On Friday, when Richard Branson offered a $25 million prize to anyone who figures out how to remove a billion tons of carbon dioxide per year from the atmosphere, Al Gore sat by his side and called it an “important and welcome” initiative. For once, Mr. Gore couldn’t be accused of hype.

Air Force: Wind farm won't hurt radar
February 13, 2007
By Karen Jeffrey, Staff Writer
Cape Cod Times

Air Force officials are standing behind their initial findings that the proposed 130-turbine Cape Wind project would not interfere with the Air Force's PAVE PAWS radar station in Sagamore.

Supporters of the proposal to build the privately owned wind farm in Nantucket Sound regard this as a victory. Opponents say they will reserve judgment until there is a written report in hand.

Environmental Education Update
A Familiar and Prescient Voice, Brought to Life
By DENNIS OVERBYE
Published: February 13, 2007
NY Times

It’s been a long 10 years since we’ve heard Carl Sagan beckoning us to consider the possibilities inherent in the “billions” of stars peppering the sky and in the “billions” of neuronal connections spiderwebbing our brains.

In the day, the Cornell astronomer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of books like “The Dragons of Eden,” “Contact,” “Pale Blue Dot” and “The Demon-Haunted World,” impresario of the PBS program “Cosmos” and Johnny Carson regular was one of the world’s most famous and eloquent unbelievers, an apostle of cosmic wonder, critic of nuclear arms and a champion of science’s duty to probe and question without limit, including the claims of religion. He died of pneumonia after a series of bone marrow transplants in December 1996.

High Bacteria Levels Found in Two Ponds, Prompting Closures
By RACHEL NAVA ROHR
Vineyard Gazette

Due to high bacteria counts, the state Division of Marine Fisheries closed portions of two large Island ponds to shellfishing this week - one up-Island and the other down-Island.

The closures are effective immediately in part of the Tisbury Great Pond and at Major's Cove in Sengekontacket Pond, although town leaders have not yet received official letters of notification.

Global Warming Expedition 101 Update
Arrival in Iqaluit

Clouds mostly obscured the three-hour flight, but as the plane began its descent, the terrain became more visible. Streams of open water could be seen zigzagging between huge sheets of sea ice.
