Draft report provides update on petroleum contamination on Beach Rd.
By David Nash, VCS Board Member

The environmental consultants for Drake Petroleum (Vineyard Haven Xtramart) 19 Beach Rd. Tisbury have completed a draft Immediate Response Action (IRA) Plan status report. The report actually seems to contain few surprises and confirms what many already knew—that sub-surface contamination in the lower Beach Road area is widespread and is situated surprisingly close to surface.

Please go to Environmental Education for the rest of the update.

Island plan Update
DRAFT
Water Core Group

Minutes 11/2/06
Present:
Joe Alosso, Melinda Loberg, Dave Grunden, Bruce Rosinoff, Bret Stearns, Wendy Culbert, Deacon Perotta, Terry Appenzellar, Mark London, Bill Wilcox

The Group agreed to focus in most detail over 2, 5, 10 and 20-year time frames. The Core Group felt that the 50-year time frame was difficult to bring into focus.

We agreed that the water resources planning should be organized in a framework of the resources rather than viewed from the perspective of the problems and/or sources. We propose to look at the following resource breakdown: Drinking water Inland Surface Waters Estuarine Waters Marine Waters

Energy Tips
Solar Energy is a great way to get us started on the road to becoming a Renewable Energy Island and help us achieve greater energy independence. Generating power and making hot water on island homes and businesses reduces our contribution to Climate Change, particularly when combined with energy efficiency efforts. Energy generated locally is more efficient because there is less transmission loss.

Vineyard Energy Project is a great promoter of solar energy as a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Go to their site and read more about this renewable resource.

Environmentalists, Though Winners in the Election, Warn Against Expecting Vast Changes
NY Times

WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 — Last week’s election whipsawed the Congressional committees that are crucial battlegrounds for environmental and energy legislation. But even many environmentalists believe that an ambitious new agenda is unlikely. The leadership changes are striking. Senator Barbara Boxer, Democrat of California, who favors mandatory cuts in emissions linked to global warming, will become chairwoman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, replacing Senator James M. Inhofe, Republican of Oklahoma, who has called the scientific consensus on human-induced global warming “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind.”

Land Conservation Update
Conserving Family Lands
New Incentives Expire in 2007

One of the most important tools for open space protection is the Conservation Restrictions (CR). Conservation restrictions allow landowners to retain ownership of property while also ensuring that it will remain undeveloped in perpetuity.

Enthusiasm Builds for Farm Agency
By IAN FEIN
Vineyard Gazette
Just over a decade ago, the Massachusetts state government cut funding for the Dukes County Cooperative Extension Service and forced closure of the popular Island program, which provided useful resources for Vineyard farmers.

Today, with a resurgence of small-scale agriculture spreading across the country and taking hold here on the Vineyard, the state is recommending the creation of another Island public agency to address farming interests.

Climate Change Update
Sweden tops climate change efforts, U.S. near bottom, environmentalists say
November 13, 2006
The Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya: Sweden, Britain and Denmark are doing the most to protect against climate change, but their efforts are not nearly enough, according to a report released Monday by environmental groups.

"We don't have any winners, we only have countries that are better compared to others," said Matthias Duwe of the Climate Action Network-Europe, which released the data during the second week of the U.N. climate conference. "We don't have big shining stars."

The Earth Is Shrinking: Advancing Deserts and Rising Seas Squeezing Civilization
Lester R. Brown
Our early twenty-first century civilization is being squeezed between advancing deserts and rising seas. Measured by the land area that can support human habitation, the earth is shrinking. Mounting population densities, once generated solely by the addition of over 70 million people per year, are now also fueled by the relentless advance of deserts and the rise in sea level.

Energy Update
It heats. It powers. Is it the future of home energy?
By Mark Clayton
The Christian Science Monitor

Residential 'micro-combined-heat-and-power' units are efficient furnaces that create electricity.

Down in Bernard Malin's basement is a softly thrumming metal box that turns natural gas into hotwater and generates $600 to $800 worth of electricity a year - a bonus byproduct of heating his home.
