    Web Address: www.sengekontacket.org

Description: Friends of Sengekontacket, Inc. (FOS) was formed when in 1988 the pond was closed for the first time to shellfishing due to high coliform counts. Since that time we have assessed Sengekontacket’s natural ecosystems, identifying any threats to water quality and initiating long range planning based on a scientific database. FOS is an independent, not-for-profit organization governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. Volunteers plant beach grass on the Joseph Sylvia State Beach, staff the annual beach clean-up effort and organize environmental education programs, such as providing watershed residents with stewardship guidelines. FOS founded the Barrier Beach Task Force, partnering with Dukes County government and state officials, to maintain and preserve the natural resources of the pond and beach. In conjunction with Martha’s Vineyard Commission (MVC), FOS enabled participation in the Massachusetts Estuaries Project by funding research and collecting data to document the degrading quality of pond water, habitat and animal life. FOS secured grant funding to collaborate with MVC in eel grass re-planting. FOS created the Carry In/Carry Out program to encourage school children and adults to take responsibility to remove their own trash and litter as they enjoy the pond and its barrier beach.

    Our Mission:

  • • To protect and preserve water quality in Sengekontacket Pond and Trapps Pond

  • • To preserve habitat for aquatic plants and animals, shellfish, and birds.

  • • To promote environmentally sound management and use of the pond and barrier beach

  • • To initiate, support and fund research and activities that will benefit the Sengekontacket Pond systems and the Joseph Sylvia State Beach

  • • To provide an outreach program to promote public awareness of and education about the Sengekontacket watershed

  • • To collaborate with watershed residents, recreational and commercial pond and beach users and all relevant levels of government in developing and implementing conservation strategies for the protections of Sengekontacket, Trapps Pond and the State

Felix Neck is a sanctuary for both wildlife and people, protecting some of the Vineyard's most valuable habitats and wildlife and most spectacular views. Four miles of trails through woodlands, meadows, ponds, salt marsh, and barrier beach allow for exploration, discovery, and quiet contemplation. Delight in the nature that unfolds; nesting osprey and other birds, butterflies, and a wealth of sea creatures that make Felix Neck their home.

Mass Audubon works to protect the nature of Massachusetts for people and wildlife. Together with more than 100,000 members, we care for 32,000 acres of conservation land, provide educational programs for 200,000 children and adults annually, and advocate for sound environmental policies at local, state, and federal levels. Mass Audubon's mission and actions have expanded since our beginning in 1896 when our founders set out to stop the slaughter of birds for use on women's fashions. Today we are the largest conservation organization in New England. Our statewide network of 43 wildlife sanctuaries welcomes visitors of all ages and serves as the base for our conservation, education, and advocacy work. Description: POW (Protect Our Water) is a group of concerned citizens alarmed by the rapidly increasing degradation of ponds, estuaries and drinking water on Martha's Vineyard and elsewhere that harms our health, our ecosystems and our economy. We recognize that our water quality is degraded by excessive nutrients, especially nitrogen, as well as various toxic substances, that are released into our environment by standard Title V septic systems, acid rain and snow, fertilizers and road runoff.
    Our Goals

  • To stay informed about current water problems and their causes, and possible solutions.

  • To share this information through video documentaries, other media, and educational events.

  • To lobby the Massachusetts government to change those parts of the Title 5 regulations which are currently causing most of the degradation to our water resources.

  • We seek to collaborate with other groups and individuals, and believe that together we can create the changes necessary to Protect Our Water.

SEC members collect water samples and gather field data.

The SEC partners with the Dukes County Testing Lab each summer to collect weekly water samples from 34 island beaches and then to test them for enterococcus, an unhealthy byproduct of gulls and cormorants!

We also partner with the Wampanoag Aquinnah Shellfish Hatchery as support maintenance of shellfish brood stock and seed stock. The Hatchery works to advance aquaculture and to protect water quality.

The SEC conducts Radon Testing in winter, and has distributed Lyme Disease brochures throughout the island.

Description: It has been in the past and will continue to be, into the future, the responsibility of Native Peoples to oversee the environment in which we must all survive. It is inherent to our survival. It is the purpose of the Natural Resources Department of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) to establish and maintain the capacity and capability to manage environmental programs on the Tribal Lands, as well as beyond the boundaries of the Tribal Lands.
